About me:
I am passionate about education. I have always loved children and I have made career choices that have allowed me to make an impact on the lives of children. In doing so, I found myself not only loving my career, but caring deeply for the people with whom I’ve come in contact. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to be a positive influence to many students throughout my career. As an educator, I’ve served in various roles. I worked in Davis County School District in northern Utah for 16 years. I served first as a teacher, then as a district mentor for new teachers, later as an assistant principal, and finally as an elementary school principal. I was selected and designated an Exemplary Principal as measured by district school directors using the Professional Standards for Educational Leaders. As the school leader, I was an innovator determined to identify students who were performing below grade-level standards and helped train my faculty to be able to do the same. We worked together diligently with these students so that they could master grade level skills more efficiently. As a principal, I was honored to be on the committee that selected the literacy coaches throughout the district and was part of selecting our literacy program. I also served on our principal leadership committee. As I reflect on my time as an educator, my favorite memories are of the students. Some of my most treasured memories include the smiles on the students’ faces when they had their “I-get-it moments.” I remember the little hugs around my leg that sometimes left a little something wet from their noses, and playing jump rope on the playground. I loved being included in our grade-level and school Professional Learning Community meetings to collaborate with wonderful teachers. I was always impressed by the loving parents that spent countless hours helping all students succeed. After moving to St. George six years ago for my husband’s career, I embraced my new role as a sometimes teacher to our eight grandchildren. I spend time teaching them to recognize letters, shapes, and numbers, and reading aloud with them in my arms. My family continues to inspire me and feeds my passion for being a lifelong learner. To ensure my role as a life-long learner, I have continued to keep my administrative license current. Author Craig Lock said, “It is a beautiful thing when a career and a passion come together.” I’m also honored to currently volunteer as the co-chair on the Primary Children’s Corporate and Community Relations Board.
I am honored to be serving the community as a member of the Washington County School Board. I will help to ensure high levels of learning for every student and promise to listen intently to students, parents, teachers, administrators, and superintendency as I strive to do what is best for our students. Thank you for your vote. Sincerely, Nannette Simmons nannette.simmons@washk12.org
